The film follows the classic legend closely. Shahzada Izzat Beg (Sunny Deol) arrives in India from Bukhara with his wealthy caravan and settles in Gujrat . There, he falls in love at first sight with the beautiful Sohni (Poonam Dhillon), who helps her father run a small shop selling metal pots. Izzat Beg buys a pot from her, spending all the money he has, and a deep attraction develops between them . To be near her, he dispenses with his servants and takes a job working for Sohni's family. Their secret affair becomes a scandal, forcing Sohni's parents to quickly marry her off to a potter named Rehaman . Heartbroken, Izzat Beg renounces his life of luxury and becomes a hermit, eventually working as a buffalo herder across the river from her.
