The crackdown was not merely theoretical. In the months before the regulations took effect, the government arrested popular musicians like Diamond Platnumz and Nandy for posting what it called “obscene” content on social media. Diamond Platnumz was arrested for posting a video of himself kissing a woman, while Nandy faced arrest for a WhatsApp post. The minister of information, Harrison Mwakyembe, publicly urged the youth to stop using the internet to post such content, vowing to safeguard Tanzania’s culture for future generations.
