Other major works that defined the era include Kumbalangi Nights (2019), a moving drama exploring family and masculinity; Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017), a subtle, character-driven drama by Dileesh Pothan; Puzhu (2022), an intense psychological thriller exploring familial paranoia; and Nayattu (2021), a sharp political thriller about three police constables on the run.
In 2024 and 2025, the Malayalam film industry is at a crossroads. While big stars are returning to mass masala films (to recover pandemic losses), the independent sector is producing the world's most interesting cinema outside of Europe.
