At its core, the film follows Armand Roulin (played by Douglas Booth), the son of van Gogh’s postman and friend, as he embarks on a journey to deliver the artist’s final letter. This quest leads him to investigate the circumstances surrounding van Gogh’s death, a presumed suicide that many close to the painter have come to doubt. Based on 120 of van Gogh’s greatest works and 800 of his personal letters, the plot unfolds through "interviews" with the painter’s acquaintances, portrayed by the very figures in his famous paintings, such as Doctor Gachet (Jerome Flynn) and Marguerite Gachet (Saoirse Ronan).

Set a year after his death, the postman Joseph Roulin tasks his son, Armand (Douglas Booth), with delivering the artist's final letter to his brother, Theo.
