Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM) is a severe form of malnutrition caused by an inadequate intake of protein, calories, and essential micronutrients. It represents a broad spectrum of nutritional disorders, primarily affecting children, older adults, and those with chronic illnesses.

Extreme wasting (skin and bones appearance), loss of subcutaneous fat, and severe weight loss.

Severe deficiency of protein intake, even if calorie intake is somewhat adequate. Often occurs after weaning from breastmilk.
