A "DVDRip" was a labor of love. In the context of games, ripping was the process of taking a full CD-ROM or DVD-ROM game and compressing it to a smaller size, often to fit on a CD-R or for easier distribution online. The ripper would carefully remove or compress extraneous data like intro movies, music, or high-resolution textures to create a "ripped" version that was a fraction of the original's size, sometimes reducing a 700 MB game to just 250 MB.
