The film opens in the misty, isolated town of Blackwood. We meet Elara Vance , a village healer who uses local herbs to cure the sick. When the town’s water supply becomes contaminated, the town falls ill. The fanatical town preacher, Father Soloman , blames Elara, claiming she poisoned the water to brew potions.
One of the film's standout features is its use of special effects.
