The origins of Mercedes date back to 1886 when Karl Benz, a German engineer, invented the first gasoline-powered vehicle. The Benz Patent-Motorwagen, as it was called, was a three-wheeled vehicle that marked the beginning of the modern automobile era. Over the years, Benz & Cie. continued to innovate and expand its product line, eventually merging with Gottlieb Daimler's Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz AG, which was later renamed Mercedes-Benz AG.
