The story begins in ancient Egypt, 1290 BC, where High Priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) has a forbidden love affair with Anck-su-namun, the mistress of Pharaoh Seti I. When the Pharaoh discovers their affair, Imhotep and Anck-su-namun murder him. Anck-su-namun then takes her own life, vowing that Imhotep will bring her back. Imhotep and his priests steal her body and race to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, to perform a ritual to resurrect her using the black Book of the Dead. However, they are caught by the Medjai, the Pharaoh's elite bodyguards, before the ritual is complete. Imhotep is condemned to suffer the Hom-Dai, the most horrific curse imaginable: he is mummified alive, covered in flesh-eating scarabs, and entombed in a sealed sarcophagus. His curse is that if he is ever awakened, he will unleash the ten plagues upon Egypt and use the world as his personal army of the undead.
