The story of these ringtones begins not in the digital age, but in 15th-century Andhra Pradesh. Annamayya was a prolific Telugu musician, composer, and Hindu saint, born on May 9, 1408, in Tallapaka, a village in the present-day Kadapa district. He is celebrated as the earliest known Indian musician to compose songs in a form called saṁkīrtanas . It is believed he composed an astounding devotional songs in praise of Lord Venkateswara, the presiding deity of the Tirumala Temple, though only about 12,000 have been discovered today. His works, which fall into two main categories— Adhyatma (spiritual) and Sringara (romantic/celebratory of beauty)—have had a profound influence on the structure of Carnatic music. For his monumental contribution, he is revered as the Āndhra Pāḍākavita Mahāpita , which translates to the "grandfather of Telugu songwriting".
